The Jefferson City School District took additional time to prepare a calendar that will help to support student success while also meeting the needs of our staff.
District leaders collected feedback from staff and building principals on how to use the calendar to align with our goal of becoming a premier school district and ensuring every student graduates. Sign In. Pedersen said students who return after break will "absolutely have mandatory screening," hopefully within the hour window of when they return. She said the university may ask to screen for COVID more often than it was previously, but a final decision had not been made. The decision to keep a weeklong break and switch to remote learning seems to be an attempt at finding a middle ground between the physical risks of returning to campus following a break and the mental health risks of not having one at all.
The U. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also found that students this year were suffering from anxiety and depression at higher rates than in the past. Samantha Ye, a senior at CSU, was grateful the university chose to stick with a weeklong break rather than intermittent wellness days. She said her professors were able to time the semester well so things are winding down as they transition back to remote learning.
Other Colorado universities canceled breaks, got creative. In Denver, Regis University canceled spring break and added a "mid-semester break" day on March University of Denver kept its spring break on the calendar in late March but required anyone who planned to travel to submit travel information prior to break.
If a student opted to travel, they had to submit a negative COVID test and complete a seven-day quarantine while attending classes. The university also hosted a number of events to incentivize students to stay on campus rather than travel for their break.
UC Colorado Springs and Colorado College both cancelled the traditional one-week spring break to discourage travel and prevent outbreaks; Colorado Springs gave its students two shorter breaks instead. Molly Bohannon covers education for the Coloradoan.
