According to her autobiography, she was put in the care of the Infirmary's superintendent, Samuel Crawford Edington and his wife Nancy, who taught her to sew and decorate. Beginning in the spring of , she was "bound out" to a local family to help care for their infant son, on the false promise of fifty cents a week and an education. The couple had originally wanted someone who could pump water, cook, and who was bigger.
She spent about two years in near-slavery to them where she endured mental and physical abuse. She would often have to do boys' work. One time the wife put Annie out in the freezing cold, without shoes, as a punishment because she had fallen asleep over some darning. Even in her autobiography, she kindly never told the couple's real name. In exchange for helping with the children, Annie received an education and learned to sew from Mrs. Edington, which she would later use to make her own costumes.
Family finances however, continued to be marginal. Her noted shooting ability brought an invitation from Jack Frost, a hotel owner in Cincinnati who had purchased her game, to participate in a shooting contest against a well-known marksman, Frank E. Butler Butler was on tour and while on the road, he offered challenges to local shooters.
Annie won the match with 25 out of 25 shots. Butler missed one of his shots. This amazing girl entranced Butler, and the two shooters began a courtship and they marriedn August 23, Annie and Frank Butler first appeared in a show together May 1, They became fast friends.
Until this time either Butler had received top billing or they had shared it. However, with the Wild West, Oakley was the star. Oakley and Butler prospered with the Wild West and remained with the show until When the show opened, Oakley received a lot of press due to her shooting skills and presence. She could shoot accurately with both hands, over her shoulder looking through a mirror and while standing on top of a horse. She could hit six moving targets in succession, pennies thrown in the air, and the hearts on playing cards held at a distance in the hand of her faithful husband and assistant, Frank E.
She outshined any competitor she faced, both male and female, including her husband, and she did it with her own style and grace. Annie later regretted not moving her rifle a little to the left. Stimson and offered to fully fund and raise a regiment of women volunteers to fight.
Not only this, she also offered to teach American soldiers how to accurately shoot. Unfortun- ately for history, both of her offers were turned down by the Secretary. She also once wrote to President William McKinley and offered to lead a team of 50 women sharpshooters to fight in the Spanish American War.
This offer also was turned down. It was, of course, false news. Like the strong-willed person she was, Annie spent seven years suing all 55 of the newspapers who ran the false story. She won 54 of the cases. However, she ended up spending more money on her lawyer fees than she earned from the lawsuits. But money never was the goal, standing up to injustice and returning her good name were.
Another noble act performed by Annie came at the end or her career. She melted her numerous gold medals from sharpshooting and donated the money to charity. The stories of her valor and grace go on. After traveling around the world and living at various locations in the United States, spending much of her time hunting Annie eventually ended up back in Darke County, living her final years near downtown Greenville with her husband of 50 years.
The Pilgrimage Today it is possible to visit many sights related to Annie Oakley by taking a driving tour of Greenville and northeast Darke County. Along with being adored the world over, the residents of Darke County have celebrated her remarkable life with a museum, a statue, paintings, historical markers and plaques, and even two annual festivals—the Annie Oakley Festival and Gathering at Garst, both held on the same weekend in July.
