At the University of Washington, we focus on a particular area of landscape architecture we call urban ecological design. We believe that cities like Seattle can be re designed to support the health and well-being of human beings and other species. Their website highlights the innovative projects and leaders in the profession and includes plenty of resources and information for the aspiring landscape architect.
Designing Our Future: Sustainable Landscapes features a series of animations created by Daniel Tal, ASLA, to show how landscape architects use sustainable design approaches to solve pressing social, environmental, and economic challenges. Landscape Architecture Foundation LAF supports the preservation, improvement and enhancement of the environment through promoting research, scholarships and leadership in the field.
So where does this leave landscape architecture? We know landscape definitely includes anything with bushes in it, but in almost every other regard, the scope and definition of landscape among all other allied professions is debatable.
Among the various discrete disciplines in most complex urban development projects, landscape architects could be considered responsible for the overall sense of place in the external environment. Architects will take issue with this assertion, as will most planners and even some artists and engineers, but ultimately it is the landscape architect who gives form and character to the physical environment through the design and specification of its various elements. I do not believe that mastery of these individual elements defines us as professionals, at least in terms of our overall responsibility to mankind and the planet.

Now, it covers not only small-scale private projects, but also involves planning and designing public spaces. Landscape architects take on the role of designer and manager of design projects while working in a complementary role to the landscape contractor, who is in charge of the project installation.
Landscape Architecture is a rewarding and important green career in high demand especially as development continue to impact the natural environment.
It is rooted in an understanding of how the environment works and what makes each place unique. In many projects, landscape architects actively collaborate with other disciplines, including architects, civil engineers and city planners. Before beginning a career in landscape architecture, formal education with either a professional degree of Bachelor of Landscape Architecture or a Master of Landscape Architecture is required.
After graduation, states require the completion of registration exams to obtain the licensure to be legally titled a Landscape Architect. There are many landmark places designed by landscape architects that people can recognize immediately, such as the Central Park in New York City mentioned above, Millennium Park in Chicago and Myriad Gardens in Oklahoma City in our own great state of Oklahoma.
