On one occasion in , Osceola killed a Seminole chief for selling cattle to whites at Fort King. Osceola attended several parleys with American officials, after which he usually left disgusted and dissatisfied.
During one supposed treaty meeting near St. Augustine , Florida, Osceola was knocked out, bound, and imprisoned — all while under a flag of truce.
Following various attempts at escape, officials brought Osceola and several other Seminoles to Fort Moultrie , South Carolina in December George Catlin, a well-known artist, portrayed Osceola while forming a brief friendship with the legendary Seminole.
He was buried on the grounds outside of the fort, albeit without his head, which was removed by Dr. For almost two years, he led a band of warriors in resistance against the United States during the second Seminole war. He was raised in Creek traditions. The Creek nation had lived along the Tallapoosa River in present day Alabama for generations.
In , after the Red Stick Creek were defeated by US forces, Polly migrated to Florida along with other Creek refugees and joined the Seminole where Billy grew to adulthood and was given the name Osceola. The further encroachment from settlers led to many skirmishes between Seminoles and the military. Lands were seized and the Seminoles moved farther south into Florida.
Additional pressure was laid upon the Seminoles to agree to sell their land and move to lands west of the Mississippi. George Catlin, the famous artist who focused on Native American culture, visited and painted Osceola in his full Seminole attire: ostrich plumes, turban, war dress, and gorget.
