White, Black, Indian, Javan, and Sumatran make up the five species of rhino in the world. Due to widespread poaching, all rhinos are under threat, but the black rhino, Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino are classified as critically endangered and could become extinct in as few as three generations.
Despite its appearance, a rhino horn is not made of bone, instead the core substance of rhino horn is a protein called keratin, the same substance found in the fingernails and hair of many mammals including humans. Keratin in a rhino horn is a compacted mass of hairs that grows throughout the life of a rhino. For rhinos, snorts signal anger, huffs are greetings, while surprised squeaks often mean confusion.
Because of that sensitivity, rhinos have to be mindful of their skin and take care of it, or else it can become vulnerable, irritated and damaged.
Rhinos of any breed have thick skin, but that doesn't mean that it's strong. In fact, a rhino's skin is relatively sensitive, and this is why he has so much of it. It's like wrapping yourself in a bunch of soft blankets -- just one wouldn't do much to protect you from the elements, but thick layers of them insulate you with protective padding.
While the surface of a rhino's skin is vulnerable to irritation, then, its thickness helps prevent serious injuries or complications. A rhino can't afford to take his thick skin for granted -- if he doesn't take care of it, it can easily get hurt. It always stays close to rivers or swamps because it loves wallowing in mud. Such baths help it avoid overheating its huge body and protect skin against insects. Rhinoceroses are active only in the morning and in the evening.
They are extremely agile in comparison to their size; they can immediately change the direction they move into. Rhino has very poor sight , but it has very good hearing and the perfect smell.
These senses help these big mammals recognize the danger and contact each other. Its body is covered with extremely thick skin which is in the form of the carapace in some species. Horns are certainly the most characteristic feature of rhinoceros. They have got two, the front one is bigger.
Because of horns, rhinoceros are hunted for; therefore, all five species are almost extinct. In Arabian countries, valuable hilts of daggers are made, and also in eastern medicine, they are used to produce various medicines. Despite introducing the protection for these animals and the prohibition to trade the horn, rhinos are still dying. It is thanks to the high prices of the horn and continuous demand for it.
Therefore, rhinoceros have survived only in natural reserves and national parks. Below, we present a short film showing the walk of the Indian rhinoceros. What is the name of agent ? My name is Rhinoceroses Characteristics of rhinos Rhinoceros are big and most often lonely living herbivores existing in Africa and South-East Asia. The skin of the back and flanks exhibits a steep stress-strain curve with very little 'toe' region, a high elastic modulus MPa , a high tensile strength 30 MPa , a low breaking strain 0.
By comparison, the belly skin is somewhat less stiff, weaker, and more extensible.
