This vaccine is usually given as a single dose. You may need a repeat vaccine if your TB skin test is still negative 2 to 3 months after you received your first BCG vaccine. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Some side effects may occur up to 5 months after you receive BCG vaccine.
These side effects may also last for several weeks. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. Before receiving this vaccine, tell the doctor about all other vaccines you have received in the past 30 days. This list is not complete.

Who should have the BCG vaccine? What is TB? TB is an infectious disease. It can cause tiredness, coughing, fever, and shortness of breath. Children BCG vaccination should only be considered for children who have a negative TB test and who are continually exposed, and cannot be separated from adults who Are untreated or ineffectively treated for TB disease, and the child cannot be given long-term primary preventive treatment for TB infection; or Have TB disease caused by strains resistant to isoniazid and rifampin.
Health Care Workers BCG vaccination of health care workers should be considered on an individual basis in settings in which A high percentage of TB patients are infected with TB strains resistant to both isoniazid and rifampin; There is ongoing transmission of drug-resistant TB strains to health care workers and subsequent infection is likely; or Comprehensive TB infection-control precautions have been implemented, but have not been successful.
